DLSC Phase Two Opening Plan Updates:

Effective this Thursday, June 19, we will adopt the following new policies:

1.         Lower the Swim Age: Children ages 10 and up may sign up for lap lanes with a parent.  After passing the Patch test, children age 10 or 11 may sign up for lap lanes without a parent.

2.         1 - 3 Swimmers/Walkers Per Lane: When reserving a lane, a member will be able to reserve the lane for 1, 2 or 3 swimmers/walkers.  DLSC will not force swimmers/walkers from different families into the same lap lane. Members using lap lanes must be engaged in exercise or swim instruction of a family member.

3.         Family Access: Families may gain access to the pool by reserving a lap lane which will also provide access to 1 of the 12 tables. A Membership may reserve one lane per day for 45 minutes per day.

4.         Sign Up Policy: Due to the ‘no show’ rate, swimmers must sign up for ONE day at a time three days in advance. When you sign up, you must show for your allotted time. Sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/904054CABA623A1FA7-phase2

5.         Adopt a Swim Cancellation Policy: If you are going to miss your time (which happens), please be courteous and cancel on sign up genius as soon as possible but at least 1 hour prior to your time so someone else can take your spot.

Current Policies:

Refunds:
•          Any sort of refund will not be considered until the end of the 2020 season.

Check In:
•          Please arrive at the pool no earlier than 5 minutes prior to your swim time.

•          Upon coming to the pool, please walk up to the front desk and check in - note you will be asked screening questions. We will check your pool membership number and reservation time. Please then walk through the gate to the side of the bathhouse and go to the lane of your choice.

•          Please prepare to finish your swim within the 45-minute time limit. You may, of course, leave earlier.

Mask and Social Distancing Policy:
We highly encourage you to wear masks outside the water and for recreational purposes. Please do not break social distancing rules for the benefit and safety of the other members and staff.

Cleaning Procedures:
DLSC cleans the pool grounds and equipment according to best practices defined by the Center for Disease Control and Virginia Department of Health.

Security and Pool Rules:
1.         Maintain ten (10) feet of separation from members and staff at all times

2.         Respect other swimmers/walkers - sometimes people will be late or early to their reserved times - please be tolerant and patient.

3.         With Phase 2, after completing a swim, family swimmers/walkers may remain for the duration of their 45 minute reservation using their assigned table and chairs.

4.         You may leave your bag/towel by the side of the pool.

5.         The bathhouse is open to members at this time. If a bathroom is required, members should consider using the family bathroom before using the bathhouse.

6.         Follow all DLSC rules and policies as outlined on dlsc.net.

There will be more information in the weeks to come on new policies for families and individuals to come to the pool and use the facilities.

We will continue to provide updates to these and other decisions and want to thank our members for their patience and understanding during this time. Should you have any questions related to the timing of the pool opening, please email questions to info@dlsc.net.

July 3 Newsletter
Letter From the President

DLSC Community,

Last week was a big week at DLSC.  The Dolphins had their first swim/dive practices, morning swim started and water aerobics were introduced, not to mention Cornhole had their first competitive matches in over a year.  Dunn Loring Swim Club is now offering more than 100 hours a week of access which is more than most other pools in the area and over 350 memberships have used the pool thus far. Members have shared that they feel the pool is operating in a safe and controlled manner, and they are having fun.

Our goal under the current circumstances is to safely provide all members access to DLSC facilities while maintaining operational efficiency, effectiveness, and adherence to “use guidelines” outlined by the Governor and local authorities to protect our members and staff. You can help by maintaining 10 ft of social distance, wearing your mask, and not sharing equipment. Thanks in advance for your continued support in keeping us all safe.

The Board is excited to announce new changes this week that will help address this challenge.

Given the Governor’s Phase 3 Guidelines effective July 1, DLSC can now:

Open the Baby Pool - Families with children 5 years old and under will be able to reserve a table and half of the baby pool.  Families must maintain 10 ft of social distance and families may not share a table or their half of the baby pool.

Offer Dive Board Use Only Reservations - Two families will be able to reserve a place on the diving board during each session .  Families and divers must maintain 10 ft of social distance as they share the boards with others and Divers are not permitted in lap lanes. Do not  reserve a dive board only if you have reserved a lane, shallow or baby pool. That is included. This is for DIVE ONLY. We had a number of people reserve both Dive only and other for the same time slot.

Extend Family Lap Lane Use - Families reserving lap lanes may have up to 6 family members in a lane and free swim is permitted.  Families must maintain 10 ft. of social distance from other families in nearby lanes.  Multiple families are NOT permitted in the same lane.

Reserve the Training Pool Shallows - Families may now reserve one of the two shallow end sections. Families reserving the shallow end may have up to 6 family members in the shallow end and free swim is permitted.  Families must maintain 10 ft. of social distance from other families in nearby lanes.  Multiple families are NOT permitted in the same shallow end section.

These changes allow DLSC to offer 6 additional slots for Family Reservations.  That gives 54 more memberships a day a chance to get in the pool in addition to the 108 memberships using the pool each day.  These counts do not include Morning Sunrise Lane Swimmers, dive team and swim team.

The Board recognizes that this is not a perfect solution.  As of Wednesday evening, 330 of 605 active Members have signed up and used Family Swim Lanes. The constraints imposed to manage social distance and safety don’t afford access to every member in a given day.

Pool Reservation Policy UpdateMany of you have been able to enjoy the pool but some of you have not. The top complaint has been reservations and the speed with which they fill up.  We need your help.  Since cannot limit SignUp Genius signups, is not able to enforce equitable allocation of sessions. So we are asking our community members to help. Please only hold 2 reservations for any combination of swim lane, shallow, and baby pool for any three day period.

Members reserve lanes at most 2 out of every 3 days
Only one family reservation per day remains the rule.

DSLC Reservation Timing

The DLSC week starts on Friday and ends on Thursday.  SignUp Genius is configured to provide three days of availability at a time.  The weekly schedule has followed this pattern since our June 5 opening:

Wednesday evening - The Board and Staff meet to review operational safety & status, consider & approve adjustments, and propose & approve the schedule for the week (Friday - Thursday).

Thursday Noon - The schedule for Friday to Thursday is created and 3 days of availability are published. (Not until Thursday at Noon will a member see availability for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.)

Friday at 12:00:01 AM - The availability for Monday automatically becomes available for reservations.

Saturday through Tuesday at 12:00:01 AM - a new day automatically becomes available for reservations.

Wednesday at 12:00:01 AM - there is no availability for Friday as the new week schedule has not yet been approved by the board.  Friday, Saturday, and Sunday availability are not published until Thursday at Noon.

Frequently Asked Questions

May a member sign up for more than Family Reservation per day?

No.  While SignUp Genius may not prohibit multiple reservations per day, a swimmer/walker or family should not reserve for more than 1 session per day.  Please be considerate of your fellow DLSC community.  The exception to this policy is morning sunrise swim and water aerobics.  Swimmers can sign up for a morning swim lane, water aerobics and reserve a lane for their family later in the day 2 out of 3 days.

May a family reserve time each day of the week?

No. Please reserve only 2 days out of 3 except for water aerobics and morning sunrise swim.

May a family bring a guest?

No. Working with the 40+ Northern VA pools, there is a general consensus that a “No Guest” policy is safer.

What is the refund policy?

We will not consider any sort of refund until the end of the pool season. At that time, we will understand our actual costs and will make a determination. The Board has a fiduciary responsibility to maintain the financial stability of the club for 2020 and beyond.  We recognize and appreciate that this policy does not meet everyone’s needs.

Is food permitted at the pool?
No. You may bring water or other drinks in non-glass containers. If you bring something in, please take it with you when you leave.

How do I reserve a lane?
Please use the Sign Up Genius Link at: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/904054CABA623A1FA7-wk5family

If I signup for a Family Registration, will I be forced to share the lane with someone?
No.  Family Lane Registrations during normal hours is for you and your family for a maximum of 6 people in a lane. For Morning Sunrise Swim, however, we will ask for two swimmers per lane if all 12 lanes are fully used.

Please keep in mind that the mission of DLSC is to provide a safe environment to build community and have fun.  “We are all in this together.”  Please continue to maintain proper social distance (10 ft), wear your masks whenever possible, and minimize exposure to others. By doing this, we keep the pool a safe and relaxing place for everyone to enjoy.

If you have ideas and want to help, please let us know. Send a note to info@dlsc.net.

A Note from the Pool Supervisor

Hello Dunn Loring Families!

Even though this has not been a “typical” summer here at Dunn Loring Swim Club, it has been great to see so many members take advantage of the opportunities to swim here at the pool!  The Lifeguards are so happy to see many of their “little friends” return to the pool!  During phase 1 I heard comments like, “Gena, we like a thunderstorm every couple of days but this is boring” and “I never thought I would miss blowing the whistle to tell a little kid to stop running”.   We have appreciated everyone being patient and considerate as we navigate this very strange way of operating the pool!   I have worked closely with our board of directors to try to provide opportunities for using the facility while ensuring the safety of all of our staff and members.  Thank you all so much for making Dunn Loring Swim Club such a great place in the community and for sticking by us even in the middle of a pandemic! We hope to see more of you as the summer progresses and we are grateful to have such  great families here at Dunn Loring!

COVID-19 Letter from the President

June 18, 2020

DLSC Community,

Many of you have  reached out to our DLSC Membership Secretary, sending emails, or reaching out to me directly with questions, concerns, and compliments. We appreciate all the feedback, your support and most of all, your patience.
The mission of DLSC is to provide a safe environment to build community and have fun. Our goal under the current circumstances is to safely provide as many members access to DLSC facilities while maintaining operational efficiency, effectiveness, and adherence to “use guidelines” outlined by the Governor and local authorities to protect our members and staff.
While our mission has not changed, our experience at DLSC this summer will be different. To meet our goal, we must remain focused on ensuring the health and safety of our entire community and embrace the necessary compromises.

We have exciting updates regarding expanded access:

Swim Age is lowering from “12 and up” to “10 and up” - Starting June 19, children between 10 - 12 can swim with a parent in lap lanes.  Once the child has passed their Patch Test, they can swim in the family’s lap lane without a parent.
Family Access will start on June 19 - When signing up for a lap lane, family members can join the family swimmer(s) and will have access to a table and chairs. Families can bring drinks but no food.  Families can use their reserved lane with up to 3 members in a lane at a time for swimming or walking.  Swimmers/walkers can rotate with their family members. The session remains 45 minutes. To provide everyone opportunities, each Membership is limited to One reserved lane per day. It will be the responsibility of each family member to maintain 10 ft of separation. Members in lap lanes must be involved in exercise (swim, walk, or structured movement) or family member swim instruction. We are excited to take this first step to expanding use to families. We recognize that this is not a perfect solution. We will modify our approach as guidelines afford and to improve safety, access and use.
Lap Lanes for 1 to 3 Members will start on June 19 - Swimmers/walkers who reserve lanes can reserve for 1, 2 or 3 swimmers.  To start, there will be no forced pairing or tripling of swimmers/walkers. You will not have to share a lane with someone you don’t know. Members in lap lanes must be engaged in exercise or family member swim instruction.
Diving Boards will open on June 19 - With Phase 2, diving and dive well use is permitted. Lifeguards will manage access to the boards maintaining the required 10 ft of social distance.  The limit is 3 divers per diving board or a  total of 6 divers using the two diving boards.  At this time, diving boards will be available to the families during their reserved lap swim session.
Corn Hole will start on June 19 - With 10 ft of social distancing, split sessions, and no food, a modified program of this structured activity will begin on Friday evenings. Corn Hole boards will be moved to a location outside the pool area.To sign up for cornhole contact Kevin Williams at kwilliams900@gmail.com.
Dive Team will start practicing on June 22 - Phase 2 allows us to open the dive boards and dive well. The Dive team is forming and will begin practice from 8a - 11a Monday through Saturday starting June 22. Dive sessions will be modified from seasons past to support social distancing guidelines. To sign up for dive team and to view restrictions specific to this season, click on:  https://www.teamunify.com/team/recnvdld/page/team-registration. All participants must be age 8+ and be able to complete a front dive (head first) and back jump.
Swim Team will start practicing on June 29 - With adherence to guidelines of no more than 2 swimmers per lane and 10 ft of social distancing, the swim team is forming and will begin practice from 8a - 11a Monday through Saturday starting June 29. To sign up for swim team and to view restrictions specific to this season, click on https://www.teamunify.com/team/recnvdld/page/team-registration. All participants must be able to swim 50 meters (2 lengths) continuously and unassisted.
Early Morning swim will start on June 29 - While we don’t have the details ironed out yet, DLSC will extend hours for early morning swim starting on June 29. We will provide updates next week with details.
Sign Up Genius Link is:  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/904054CABA623A1FA7-phase2

What are we working on:

Structured Water Exercise - We are planning to offer water aerobics and other potential structured water activities. We will have updates next week.
Swim Instruction - We have been working with 40+ Northern VA swim clubs and State and Local authorities to expand our use of the pool to include the shallow end for parent led instruction of their non-swimmers and novice swimmers.  We hope to have an update next week.
Baby Pool Access - We have been working with 40+ Northern VA swim clubs and State and Local authorities to expand our use of the pool to include the baby pool.  Options here would probably be limited to 1 family at a time and this is not yet an approved use.  We are working on this and will have an update next week.

Refunds - We will not consider any sort of refund until the end of the pool season. At that time, we will understand our actual costs and will make a determination. The Board has a fiduciary responsibility to maintain the financial stability of the club for 2020 and beyond.  We recognize and appreciate that this policy does not meet everyone’s needs.

While the Board and I are excited to increase the use of the pool, we are also keenly aware of the priority of expanding use safely. We appreciate your patience and support as we balance the many challenges and details outlined by the authorities with the needs and desires of our many communities with DLSC. We have laid out a short term plan with more access.  We will keep collecting feedback and we will continue to adjust to improve safety and access.

“We are all in this together.”  Please continue to maintain proper social distance, wear your masks whenever possible, and minimize exposure to others. By doing this, we keep the pool a safe and relaxing place for everyone to enjoy.
